So you got your self a GoPro or you are looking at purchasing a GoPro. You are thinking about potentially getting it wet and wondering what to do about it!?!?! Well…let us help out. We are going to go over some of the GoPro accessories that are meant to get wet as well as be used in wet environments whether it be rain or 10 feet under the waters surface. 😊 Our goal is to go over some of the accessories available and then back off and let you decide what you think will work for you!
A few of the underwater and waterproof GoPro accessories we are going to cover are:
- GoPro Surfing/Wind Surfing Accessories
- GoPro Diving/Snorkeling/Scuba Accessories
- GoPro Water Accessories
Ok so before we jump into the details of each category listed above lets quickly go over some accessories that will work with your GoPro no matter what activity you are doing. The first two are a head strap and chest strap for your GoPro. There are many options out there of these two types of straps. Many of which are waterproof and are able to go underwater with your GoPro attached. The head strap and chest strap can be used for many many different activities therefore we like to mention them first as some accessories that will work with what ever you are doing. The cost of a head strap for you GoPro is in the range of $10.00 - $30.00 depending on the quality and comfort level you are after. The chest strap is about the same cost between $10.00 and $30.00. You may be able to find a package deal for both the head and chest strap for your GoPro around the $25.00 – $45.00 mark.
As we always say, the branded products generally cost more then the non brand name products but please be wary of some of the knock offs there are on the market as they may cost less but they are also built with much less quality…the good old saying you get what you pay for…not always true but often does run true! 😊
The GoPro accessories for surfing and wind surfing that we find the most beneficial are obviously as stated above the head and chest strap but not only those. There are sticky mounts that mount right onto your surfboard. These run between the $20.00 and $40.00 range depending on how large they are. If they have a safety line attached to a separate sticky mount.
Another GoPro Accessory for surfing and wind surfing we see a lot are the hand straps or gloves that have a swivel on them. This allows you to face the camera which ever angle and direction you want. These swivel gloves for GoPro camera’s are water resistant so they can be dunked multiple times, you hang them out to dry and they are good to go. The other benefit of these gloves is that you can still swim with the GoPro attached to your hand, you will need to be careful not to hit the GoPro on anything while you are swimming with it but the glove leaves your hand available for what ever grabbing and carrying it is needed for. You can expect to pay between $10.00 – $20.00 for a glove that a GoPro can mount to.
A newish accessory that has entered the market is a mouth piece that you put between your teeth and you can fasten your GoPro camera to the mouth piece while you surf or wind surf. These run around the $20.00 price range.
Moving on to GoPro accessories for diving/snorkeling/scuba. Much like surfing the swivel glove is a great GoPro accessory for diving/snorkeling/scuba. The glove still allows you to swim and maneuver/grasp items as needed which the GoPro is secure on the back of your hand. The other great GoPro Accessory for underwater is the goggles with the GoPro mount on them. This offers the advantage of the video or photos being taken from a very similar view to what you are seeing therefore giving the viewer of the final footage a very similar view and feeling to actually being underwater with you and your GoPro Camera. Goggles can range from $25.00 – $75.00 depending on the quality and fit you are after.
The last GoPro Accessory we are going to cover for under the water is the dome or the half moon case for your GoPro. This is a case that has a handle, the front of it is shaped in a half globe shape that allows there to be space between the lens of the GoPro camera and the water. This is often used in underwater photography with the GoPro. The half globe or dome shape water proof case allows for awesome photos half out of the water, showing a clear view under the water as well as above the water. These run from $50.00 – $100.00 depending on the quality of the dome you are looking at.
If you decide the GoPro dome accessory is for you, our word of caution is take care of the clear dome front. If this gets scratched or damaged there is a high chance most if not all of your footage will show that scratch or ding as the dome is quite close to the lens of your GoPro so everything will show. These dome lenses are not maintenance free. 😊
Lastly lets cover off some general water accessories for your GoPro camera. The most common is a float or floaty for your GoPro. These can serve a dual purpose. Firstly they can serve as a handle or handhold for your GoPro while underwater, but they also serve as a float. This means if you accidentally drop or let go of your GoPro it will come to the top of the water rather then dropping down to the bottom and sometimes being lost forever. These floats can also serve as a tripod does on hard surfaces. A place to mount your camera and catch some neat videos or photos. There are floats or floaties for GoPro cameras that keep the camera upside down under the waters surface to get those incredible scenes or moments you would otherwise miss from the top. Generally, floats can run from $10.00 – $45.00 depending on how fancy you want to get. If it is simply a handle float you can pick them up from between $15.00 – $25.00. If you are looking for a multiple float device to stabilize the GoPro for underwater photography then you can expect to be even higher then the $45.00 mark.
The last important GoPro accessory for under water photography would be the protective case. Some of the GoPro camera’s are already water proof which is awesome. But if you are anything like us we can get clumsy and drop/damage the camera a little which can create issues with the waterproofing of the camera. This is where a waterproof case for your GoPro is just another fail safe to protecting your equipment while around or below the H20. You can expect to pay between $25.00 and $75.00 for a good quality water proof case. Anything less then the $25.00 mark we have found to not be very high quality and will begin to leak after some time.
We hope you were able to get some helpful information from this read. No we will do as promised and back off! 😊
